Empowering Futures: ROC’s Independent Living Skills House

Students at Rotherham Opportunities College are thrilled to have the fantastic opportunity to visit the Independent Living Skills House, also known as St Ann’s House. Officially launched in October 2024, the house is designed to simulate a real-life independent living environment, giving students a chance to develop essential life skills for the future.

Shantelle, ILS Tutor said “Visiting St Ann’s House implements vital transferable skills to build the confidence needed for students’ future goals and aspirations. These skills can be used for the future of individuals whether that be living at home independently or in supported living.”

Visiting the house is a key part of the college’s ongoing efforts to equip students with the tools they need for their independence. Through hands-on experiences, students will be able to practice everything from cooking and budgeting to cleaning, all within a supportive and realistic setting.

When at the ILS house students said it felt “chilled out and relaxed” and it “felt like home”. One stated that coming to the house makes them feel more “confident and independent”. Another student enthused their favourite activity in the ILS house is “baking” and “there should be more baking!”.

The ILS house offers an invaluable experience to students helping them build their confidence, self-sufficiency, and the skills necessary for independent living. We are proud to offer this unique learning opportunity that will empower students to thrive in the future.
