Breaktime Bites: A Great Hobby and Valuable Skill-Building Opportunity

The infamous Breaktime Bites tuck shop, run by students at Rotherham Opportunities College (ROC), is proving to be not only a fun hobby but also a fantastic learning opportunity.

Originally launched as part of the Work Ready pathway’s enterprise project, students pitched their tuck shop idea to senior staff members in a formal presentation. Since its launch on the 8th of November last year, the tuck shop has become a popular hub during first break, offering favourites like toast, teacakes and crumpets.

For students buying snacks, it’s a chance to practise essential money management, communication and budgeting skills. For those working behind the counter, it’s an excellent opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork and customer service abilities.

The Work Ready tutor explains that working in the tuck shop has helped students “deal with demands, speak to customers and maintain a clean work area.” Students are also responsible for keeping the shop fully stocked, which means they “go out into the community to shop, supporting their social skills and building confidence in unfamiliar situations.”

One enthusiastic student, the self-proclaimed Head of the Tuck Shop, said, “It’s great as it gives me something to do at break times and it’s a fun hobby!”

Another student shared, “I like working at the Tuck Shop to serve customers. It builds my confidence and communication.”

The Breaktime Bites tuck shop not only gives students a fun and meaningful way to spend their breaks but also teaches real-world skills in a supportive environment. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
