Makaton

What is Makaton?

Makaton is a simple and effective way of communicating that uses symbols, signs and speech together. It helps children and young people understand and share ideas more easily, while building important skills like listening, remembering and using language. By using Makaton, they can express themselves with confidence, reduce frustration and feel more included in everyday life at home, school and in the community.

Why do we use Makaton?

At ROC, we encourage all staff and students to use Makaton because clear communication and inclusion are at the heart of our college. As a Makaton Friendly setting, our team is trained, our spaces use clear symbols, and Makaton is part of everyday life. This helps every young person feel confident, understood and fully included in their learning and social experiences.

Study Choice

At ROC, students can choose to study Makaton. This gives them the chance to develop valuable communication skills while supporting inclusion across college life.

Sign and Signer of the week

Both staff and students are recognised through our ‘Signer of the Week’, celebrating their effort and progress in learning and using Makaton. Each week we also share a ‘Sign of the Week’, following the official Makaton Charity, so ROC can keep learning together.

Sing and Sign

Our students also take part in ‘Sing and Sign’, combining music with Makaton to build confidence and joy in communication. They regularly go into the community to share their signing, spreading awareness and inclusion beyond ROC. Click here to see ROC’s Sing and Sign Playlist.

Makaton Ambassador

We have a Makaton Ambassador who is one of our students. They announce the ‘Signer of the Week’ and help with Makaton activities across college. This role gives students a chance to encourage others and make communication fun and inclusive for everyone.
